Single Player Mode

Single Player Mode is a more recent concept added to BattleBob in BattleBob Version 4.0. For the first time, BattleBob was playable even if you had nobody else to play with. Single Player Mode also brought with it a number of common RPG elements previously not present in BattleBob. This includes gaining Experience Points and leveling up, choosing and leveling Job Classes, earning currency and spending it, as well as collecting and using equipment to alter the player's stats.

Because of its more complex nature, Single Player Mode takes a little more setting up. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of how to configure Single Player Mode:

  • Set Single Player Mode: Using the `mode command, the player can set BattleBob into Single Player Mode. Simply use the script call "`mode single"
  • Initialize Battle Mode: Once the game mode is set, the player can start the game using the script call "`battlebob"
  • Log into the BattleBob game: Using the script call "`login" will log the player into the game.
  • Choose your opponent: Once the player has logged in, they must then use the `battle command to select an NPC opponent to battle. The player can choose a specific opponent to battle by viewing the Master NPC List and, using the NPC's battle code, fight them with the script call "`battle <Battle Code>". Alternatively, simply using the script call "`battle" will have Bob recommend a fighter the same level as the player. Once an opponent has logged into the Player 2 position, the player will be prompted to confirm their choice with either "`yes" or "`no".
  • Choose an Artifact: If the player has any Artifacts in their possession, Bob will ask them at this time whether or not they would like to equip an Artifact. If the player chooses "`no" the battle will begin immediately. If the player chooses "`yes", they will be shown their list of Artifacts and will be able to choose which to equip with the `artifact command, specifying after the script call which Artifact to use. If the player is able to equip more than one Artifact, they can end the Artifact selection process immediately and begin battle with the "`start" command.

  • Battle Setup is not the only way Single Player Mode differs from other BattleBob game modes. Typically in BattleBob, players start battle with all of their stats set to "0" across the board, making for completely even gameplay among players. In Single Player Mode, however, the NPC battlers each have their own stats. These stats can be seen in the Master NPC List. Because NPC Battlers have stats, it gives them an advantage over players. As such, more powerful NPCs may be out of the player's league initially.

For players to stand a chance against tougher NPC Battlers, it's necessary to collect Artifacts and Level Up. Leveling, as with any other RPG, increases the player's stats, which can help close the gap between players and NPCs. Level increases aren't the only tools at the player's disposal, Artifacts act as pieces of equipment that increase the player's stats as well. Initially, players can only equip one Artifact at a time, but as they level they'll be able to use more, allowing players to reach new heights of strength and catch up to even the toughest NPCs.

Single Player Mode is a much more involved game than traditional BattleBob. For more information, here are appropriate articles on Stats, Artifacts, Classes, and the Master NPC List.
