Battle Setup

Setting up BattleBob for play is a fairly straightforward process. There are three simple steps to starting a game of BattleBob, the following sections will detail each step and the commands necessary to achieve them.

3 Step Process

Initiating Battle Mode

Getting started in BattleBob requires knowledge of a couple key script calls, but save for a few details it's pretty easy to jump right in as Bob is quite helpful in explaining to the player what's expected of them. Assuming there are no saved battle sessions from previous fights, players can dive right into BattleBob with a single command. Otherwise, the battle session must first be either completed or deleted.

`battlebob `battlebob is the most important command in BattleBob... Since it's the script that starts the game! This script initiates Bob's Battle Mode, changing his name to BattleBob and preparing the game. Simply call it when you're ready for battle. If there is a saved battle session, you'll either need to use `resume or `cancel. `battlebob requires no additional input.

As stated, there are two other commands that may need to be called when entering Bob in Battle Mode. Since one game of BattleBob can only be played at a time, this may cause a problem if a player were to attempt to start a game with a saved session. Saved sessions may occur under one of two conditions; Either one of the players involved in the saved match suspended the match because they needed to take a break for some reason, or because Bob's connection to the IRC server was lost.

In the event that one of these things has happened, it can be remedied with one of the following commands:

`resume may be used by any player involved in the saved BattleBob session. This picks the match up right where it left off. Similarly, the command "`unpause" can also be used to the same effect, whichever is easier for the player to remember!
`cancel is your other option when dealing with a saved battle session. Using `cancel will delete the saved session. This can be used by any player attempting to start a BattleBob match. Since it can be rather rude to cancel the session if one of the players involved has merely paused the game to take a short break, you should always check the room to see if any of the involved players are present before deleting a battle session!

The Syntax is as follows:

`battlebob

`resume

`unpause

`cancel

Example:

<Nightmare> `battlebob
* Bob is now known as BattleBob
<BattleBob> BattleBob 4.0 initiated. Players please log in with `login

Altering Game Settings

Once Battle Mode is initiated and Bob's name has changed to BattleBob, Bob will list off the game's settings. These settings will include the Game Mode, the Ruleset, and the starting HP. Each of these settings can be altered to customize the BattleBob experience. If the player decides not to play after all, it's possible to deactivate Battle Mode with the `cancel command.

`mode `mode sets the gameplay mode in BattleBob. These modes each change the number of possible players and completely alter the way BattleBob is played, allowing for more unique experiences.

Currently there are 3 Modes:

  • Standard: 2 Player 1v1 Battle
  • Single: 1 Player Battle against an NPC
  • Double: 4 Player 2v2 Team Battle

Each of these modes can be easily toggled by using `mode and listing the name of the command afterword.

The Syntax is as follows:

`mode <Mode Name>

Example:

<Nightmare> `mode single
<Bob> Single Player battle mode set!

`ruleset `ruleset sets the rules for battles in BattleBob. These rulesets alter gameplay on a much smaller scale than Modes do but offer interesting twists on battles.

Currently there are 6 Rulesets:

  • Standard: Default ruleset, no modifications.
  • Armed: Players start the battle with random weapons. [Not usable in Single Mode]
  • WeaponCentric: Forces players to fight using `attack and `weapon primarily, disabling most other offensive actions. [Not usable in Single Mode]
  • Signature: Players start battle wielding their Signature Weapons.[1] [Not usable in Single Mode]
  • PokeBattle: Forces players to do battle using Pokéballs, disabling most other offensive actions. [Not usable in Single Mode]
  • Sparring: Sets both the player and their opponent to level 1 and disables the usage of Classes[2] and Artifacts[3]. Useful for practice of friendly matches against NPCs. [Not usable in Standard or Double Mode]

Each of these rulesets can be easily toggled by using `ruleset and listing the name of the ruleset afterword.

The Syntax is as follows:

`ruleset <Ruleset Name>

Example:

<Nightmare> `ruleset armed
<Bob> Ruleset changed to "Armed."

`hp `hp allows the starting HP in a game of BattleBob to be modified. This value is by default 100, but can be set as low as 50, or as high as 500. In Double Mode, the starting HP is the total health of each team, meaning each player is given half the starting HP. Starting HP is fixed to 100 in Single Player Mode, with HP being a stat modified by the player's Level, Class, and Artifacts.

The Syntax is as follows:

`hp <50-500>

Example:

<Nightmare> `hp 150
<Bob> Starting HP set to 150!

`cancel At any time during the setup phase, before the game has actually started, Battle Mode can be terminated by use of the `cancel command. This is in place if a player changes their mind about playing.

The Syntax is as follows:

`cancel

Example:

<Nightmare> `cancel
* BattleBob is now known as Bob
<Bob> Battle Mode deactivated.

Logging into BattleBob

Now that Battle Mode is initiated and the game settings are configured, the next step is logging into BattleBob. In Standard Mode, it's as simple as both players simply typing in the script call "`login" to log both of them into the game, and once both players have logged in the game will begin. In Single Mode, there's a lot more configuration involved after the player logs in (for more information on configuring Single Player Mode, read the article Introducing Single Player Mode.)

In Double Mode, logging in is a somewhat more specific process. Double Mode involves 4 players facing each other in a 2 VS 2 team battle. In every game, Players 1 and 2 are a team, while Players 3 and 4 are another team. Because of this, the order in which the players log into the game must be taken into account. This can be done with careful management of the order players log in, or by means of specifying which position each player wishes to log into (a feature supported by Double Mode.)

Players are also able to log out of their position at any time before the battle starts, making management of teams in Double easier, as well as allowing players to change their minds before playing the game.

`login `login is the command used to log into BattleBob. Players will be logged into the player position depending on the order they log in (so the first player to login is Player 1, the second player to login is Player 2.) Once all the players necessary for the game mode BattleBob is set to are logged in, the game will begin. `login requires no input, but in Double Mode, players can add a number between 1 and 4 to log into a specific player position, but if no number is specified Bob will default to adding players in order.

`logout Alternatively, the `logout command can be used to log a player out of a BattleBob match before it begins. This can be useful if the player logs into the wrong position or a player changes their mind about playing.

The Syntax is as follows:

`login <1-4>

`logout

Example:

<Nightmare> `login
<BattleBob> Nightmare has logged in as Player 1.

<Nightmare> `login 3
<BattleBob> Nightmare has logged in as Player 3.

<Nightmare> `logout
<BattleBob> Nightmare has logged out as Player 1.
