Today in Japan, Nintendo confirmed the upcoming release of the Wii's successor. The still-unnamed console will be revealed at this year's E3 gaming expo in Los Angeles in June. The new console will go on sale in 2012, said Nintendo in an official statement. Sales of this new system have not been included in the financial forecasts announced today for the fiscal term ending March 2012, which suggests that the new console might not be out before the April 2012 calendar year. Kotaku broke the news that Sony and Microsoft are apparently waiting until 2014 for their new machines, making Nintendo first out of the gate in the next console generation. This console, believed to be code-named "Project Cafe", is rumored to be a powerful machine, boasting bigger and badder specifications than either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, "We would like to propose a new approach to home video game consoles." But don't look for that to include 3D. The Wii successor is also suspected of using a novel controller interface which marries a traditional d-pad-and-buttons scheme with a large touch-screen input. Kotaku also reported that while the new console will feature a new controller, it will also support Wii Remote-style controllers. "We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held from June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles", Nintendo said in a written statement. Nintendo's announcement today confirms what Kotaku originally reported. According to Nintendo, there will also be more details shared at that time. kotaku.com/#!5795241/nintendo-confirms-wii-successor kotaku.com/#!5795285/nintendo-wants-new-approach-with-wii-successor kotaku.com/#!5795447/nintendos-new-console-playable-by-everyone-at-e3 It seems today that Nintendo confirmed all the rumors that have been flying around lately.

Huh, that's pretty cool!
I wonder what kind of games we'll be able to play on those in the future?

I doubt Nintendo will ever go as far with online play as Microsoft or Sony, just because the nature of unrestricted online play doesn't seem to sit well with the friendly atmosphere Nintendo stands for.

I'm not sure what you mean by unrestricted online play but I'm not saying I want to hear 8 year olds screaming cuss words out of their headsets. It would however be nice if you could actually communicate with people to help set up matches and such, or just talk with your friends while you play. Maybe they could set it up so you don't have to hear anyone not on a friends list or in your party, but its really really bad right now. Case in point, if anyone at ZV wanted to play Smash you have to have a computer on the floor next to you opened to the chat. Its really stupid not being able to communicate, just saying.
And then there's the minor issue of Nintendo being cheap with their servers so it takes forever to find someone to play with, and then you get to suffer through their lag the entire match. Loads of fun. Especially when you get paired with some idiot who plays Kirby or MK and sits and taunts the entire time, really contributes to that friendly atmosphere you're talking about. Their current system was very poorly done and I just hope they make the necessary changes.

Their current system was very poorly done and I just hope they make the necessary changes. Unfortunately there's not a lot you can do to prevent a bunch of 8 year olds cussing over headsets if you allow something like that. Which is exactly what Nintendo doesn't want. So I doubt we'll ever get something that'll allow us to actually communicate with each other during the game... I would like for it to be easier to connect to each other and easier to get random matches though. Cause in regard to Brawl, I share your sentiments that it's annoying when you gotta wait 15 minutes for a match just to get stuck with a retard who just taunts the entire time... I don't expect Nintendo's online play to get very extensive though, because they've always been more for group activities and actual social stuff than internet play... They'd rather focus on making their games fun for when you invite some friends over, playing with random people on the internet isn't exactly one of their priorities.

Can't say I'm very enthused after reading this article. This one as well. 1) Nintendo admits that their games aren't selling as well as they could be. But they say that it's because of the trend of realistic graphics. Well... Think about it. A lot of the major hits since the PS1 have had a realistic-looking graphics style for their time, even if their gameplay wasn't grounded in it. Yet somehow, Ocarina of Time 3D looks also to prove that Nintendo is avoiding this trend, and only using it in select few instances. 2) This just reeks of "we don't want even to try to compete", like they've given up before the fight begins. To me, this does not spell out anything that might grab anybody's attention. Let alone the attention of the CoD generation, who are undoubtedly the most influential audience at this point in time. I understand that the goal might be to not look rude to other companies, but it just makes me think that it could extend to releases on other platforms.

If any of you watched Nintendo's press conference today, you probably saw the video they had of some of the games to expect on Wii U. It was full of stuff like Darksiders 2, Ninja Gaiden, and other games with gratuitous displays of blood and violence. They also had a few tech demos set up, one of which was a 1080p sequence of Link preparing to fight a giant spider in some sort of cathedral. It was all rendered real-time and looked absolutely phenomenal. While they opened up with lots of stuff that made the Wii so popular (fit, mii games, sports, etc), I think they made it clear that they really are planning on catering to everyone this time around.
