The next installment in the Zelda series has been formally announced for the Wii U during Nintendo’s Digital Event today at E3 with a tentative release date of 2015. While no formal title has yet been announced, a beautiful trailer of the game accompanied its reveal, showing off a graphical style similar to that of Skyward Sword. Surprisingly, Link (or is it Link?) does not don his signature green tunic or hat, instead trading those in for a ponytail and a blue outfit, as well as a magnificent bow! On horseback, Link battles a large creature in a fight to the death in an open world Zelda! Kotaku has reported that all of the footage of the new Zelda title was in-engine, and not pre-rendered per a Nintendo rep, showing off the graphical prowess of the Wii U. However, the footage was not taken from a gameplay perspective. Eiji Aonuma introduces the reveal, discussing the game and how the conventions of the Zelda series have changed. “It’s quite a vast world, isn’t it? You can even reach those mountains in the distance, if you walk far enough. “We couldn’t create such a wide world like this in the past. As far as what you can do with such a vast field to explore, as soon as those boundaries are removed, it means you can enter any area from any direction. So the puzzle-solving in this game begins the moment the player starts to think about where they wanna go; how they will get there, and what they will do when they arrive. This is a clean break from the conventions of past games in the Zelda series, where you had to follow the set path and play through the scenario in the right order. “I believe this departure will create opportunities for new gameplay that have not been experienced in previous Zelda games. As you can see, and as you know from the Zelda series, the world in these games can be quite peaceful. However, it is a Zelda game after all, so strong enemies will certainly appear, even in this setting. Powerful enemies appearing in such a peaceful world is one of the defining features of the Zelda series.” As one of the most anticipated games for the Wii U, we will definitely be looking for more news about Zelda U as it comes!

LOS ANGELES — That trailer for the new The Legend of Zelda for the Wii U sure looked great, didn’t it? But what was up with Link? He wasn’t wearing his iconic green tunic or hat. Why did Link look so weird? “No one explicitly said that that was Link.”That’s what Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma told me when I asked him about Link’s — or whomever it is — new appearance during an interview at Nintendo’s E3 booth. He said this with a smile and a laugh. Could the bow-wielding hero we just saw not be Link, the star of every game in the series history? Earlier in the interview, Aonuma told me that he was always looking for ways to shake up Zelda’s conventions. We saw this in the recent A Link Between Worlds for the 3DS, which let you explore dungeons in any order you wanted while renting items from a store. But a Zelda game without Link as the main hero? That would be a huge strike at the series’ long-standing tradition. So, who is that in the trailer? The outfit actually looks like the same one Link wore in the beginning of The Wind Waker. Aonuma himself smiled when I brought up this connection. Could this new entry be tied to that universe? Of course, that doesn’t explain why this wouldn’t be Link. Maybe it’s a child of a Link we already played as, like the one from Wind Waker or Skyward Sword. Let the speculation begin. Source: Venture Beat

In a recent interview with Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, Eiji Aonuma talked about redefining what we consider to be a puzzle in Zelda Wii U, instead focusing on the choices that players have to make in order to move forward throughout the game as opposed to the traditional block puzzles and such to progress through dungeons. “As a player progresses through any game, they’re making choices. They’re making hopefully logical choices to progress them in the game. And when I hear ‘puzzle solving’ I think of like moving blocks so that a door opens or something like that. But I feel like making those logical choices and taking information that you received previously and making decisions based on that can also be a sort of puzzle-solving. So I wanna kinda rethink or maybe reconstruct the idea of puzzle-solving within the Zelda universe.” This would be a breath of fresh air for the Zelda franchise and turn the idea of puzzle solving in Zelda completely on its head. Will we still have traditional puzzles? Will the dreaded block puzzles that Cody hates so much finally disappear from the series? This quote opens up so many possibilities, and follows what Aonuma has been repeatedly saying about re-thinking the conventions of Zelda. With the reveal that Zelda Wii U is completely open world, this opens up so many possibilities in terms of player choice and game progression, and hopefully will give us some brand new puzzles that we have never seen before in a Zelda title. The Legend of JumpingFor the first time ever in the canon Zelda series (sans Zelda II), Link has the ability to JUMP on command. This new feature was shown off during today's E3 live stream, and it marks a stepping stone in the series. Is this what Aonuma was talking about when he told us he would be breaking the boundaries of Zelda? During the Treehouse Breath of the Wild segment, it was confirmed that all of the grass can be cut. So Zelda Lawn Mower Mode has officially been confirmed! Just don't expect any heart healing items to be popping up from the lawn trimmings anytime soon. Because of the new healing item system, hearts will no longer be popping up when you decide to go full weed whacker with your weapon. In a later segment though, they showed there’s still a reason to cut the grass. Insects will pop up sometimes when you start mowing down the lawn. This may in fact hint at a possible bug collection side quest in the full version of the game. The one insect type that did appear were bees. During today's Treehouse Livestream, Nintendo showed off Breath of the Wild's opening area called the Shrine of Resurrection. The first item he receives is called the Sheikah Slate, which will supposedly guide him on his quest throughout Hyrule. On the Nintendo Treehouse stream today, Aonuma and Bill Trinen were very quick to mention the inspiration Breath of the Wild takes from the very first Legend of Zelda game. For starters, Link is dropped into the world with no backstory or tutorial. It's up the player what to do next. Then of course there is the Old Man cameo — but he doesn't give you a sword or tell you about it being... How big is this game?12 times bigger than Twilight Princess. That’s how big Breath of the Wild’s map is. The map below represents the area playable in the E3 demo. This, according to Nintendo, is not even two percent of the overall map size!!! Here is what the map looks like when you zoom out: This game is huge, filled with life, and free for you to explore in true open world style. According to Aonuma, they removed most people, villages and story elements in this demo so even with the teeming wildlife, enemies, landmarks, and the hundred shrines, there is more. This could turn out to be the most vast and expansive Zelda game in size and content. The excitement this game has garnered today is through the roof. What about you?

Im just going to go on a whim and say this is the Wind Waker timeline. All the evidence supports it

Aside from the presence of the Koroks I don't see anything that points to the Wind Waker timeline. If anything I'd say it's Timeline A where Link loses to Gannon in OoT and 10,000 years of darkness or something. Link wakes up in a revitalization chamber, Hyrule is in such ruin that plants and overgrowth have covered most of the buildings and there are hardly any sentient beings around. All that remain are myths and secrets left by the Sheikah, it really sounds to me like this is taking place far in the future after Gannon has wiped out nearly everything.
I've also heard rumors that they'll try to use this game to connect the three timelines and have them all converge into one but I don't know how much I believe in that either. I'm not sure I'd even want that, multiple timelines/era give them freedom to tell whatever kind of story they want.
