That was because, so I heard, that during the fight between your character and Master Albert, he said that he created the Model A and put his name on the Model itself.
Apparently since the Model's abilities are like that of Axl, people would prefer to call it A for Axl. So, which side should we believe? I think that's the rationale to that question mark.

It's capcom being lazy. They Made axl into a biometal but couldn't think of a storyline so they made it model albert.

... Let's think in a storyline perspective, rather than the production-mode perspective.

Well, I guess it could be that Axl never got a BioMetal, and he was the most advanced reploid of his time. Albert found this out and made the BioMetal after Axl, to hone that powerful move to change his appearance like Axl did.

Can you explain or rephrase "to hone that powerful move to change his appearance like Axl did" again? I didn't get it.
Clever speculation, however. Too bad the only proof was Albert's own word of mouth.

Well, Axl could change into any reploid (bosses) he defeated right? The possibilities are endless with a move like that.
Like in Megaman X: Command Mission (SPOILERS FOLLOWING), Axl uses his shape-shift to infiltrate the Melda Ore Plant to find out the origin of his ability, and Spider was really Redips using the same chip.
He uses the same moves in X7 and 8 right? (I've never played them so I don't really know, but most likely yes.)
Albert would have made Model A to use that power, and infiltrate areas by becoming a co-worker or something.

Axl was able to obtain weapons from bosses, but so far in the X games he can only warp according to the Reploids that are of same height and size like him. The rest is just their abilities.
Albert basically made an improvement.

Well, I remember from reading MMHP.net's entry on MMX: command mission, it takes place between MMZ and MMX8, so it's also possible Axl's morph chip was upgraded. (MMX:CM also adds another 100 years to MMZ since it's impossible for X, Axl and Zero to be in MMZ's time, and reploids are still most of the population)(Iunno if most fans would consider MMX:CM apart of the X's actual time-line though)

I had seen a log chat of Capcom employees before, and reportedly the Japanese side apologized on that, for some reason where most people cannot view it, that the date of CM was typo-errored. It was still in 21XX.
And care to speculate how come Axl still didn't know his origin in CM, as compared to X8, IF CM takes place after X8?

I don't know X8, since I never played it. Maybe CM is a different version of the X series, I'm not sure. It does seem to have a "Megaman Zero" feel to it, since you join a resistance.

The Resistance was made to go against the Rebellion, which in turn wanted to rebel against the human government that ruled Giga City. This CM version of the Resistance isn't exactly the Zero version of Resistance, since the CM version is like supporting government ruke, whereas the Zero version is against the government.

as much as i despise CM there's a chance it takes place between X7-X8. This is because Axl didn't know who he was in X7 but in X8 he knew everything about being prototype(prototypes are awesome Axl, Protoman).
