That's what I thought about Fire Emblem too, but then the battle animations looked like crap compared to the beautifully animated and stylized sprites in previous games.
I dunno, if they do it right it'll be fine, but I'd prefer high-quality sprites over mediocre polygons any day of the week.

But Pokemon sprites don't have battle animations... they move to the left and right and shake...

This is true. But if they made them 3-D you know they'd try to give them battle animations. That's all well and good for console games, but it doesn't belong in the handhelds.
And I'm not just talking about battle animations, I'm talking about the whole game. From the screenshots we've seen, the buildings and such look choppy and low-quality. The graphical quality was much better before they went 3-D. I'd even go so far as to say I liked it better in RSE than DP and on, but it hasn't been too bad of a shift so far.
I dunno, I have faith that they won't mess it up too bad, and I'm sure I'll enjoy the 5th gen.

While some diehard series fans were quick to show their dismay that the new games aren't coming out on the Nintendo 3DS first, Pokemon Black and Pokemon White is still looking like a pretty decent update for the million-selling series. That's the take-home we got, at least, from a set of screenshots published in this week's issue of Famitsu magazine. Among the things hinted at in the screens is a brand-new cityscape setting, with your trainer traveling on elevated paths (an extension of cycling roads, perhaps?) and weaving his way through tall buildings. Also depicted is a new one-stop Pokemon shop that combines the facilities of a PokeMart, Pokemon Center and Global Terminal into a single building -- the Pokemon equivalent of a Walmart Supercenter, you could say. The various towns and cities will be more "realistic", not to mention convenient. The Pokémon Center and Pokémart have been combined into a one-stop shop, so you can buy items and heal your party all under one roof, which is a welcome change. There is also a new form of monster evolution, called "Evolution 3", but details are sketchy and nobody's quite sure what it means yet. The setting isn't the only new thing, either. In addition to the usual sort of visual upgrades, Pokemon Black/White will feature a battle system that, if initial impressions are worth anything, will be quite a bit more dynamically depicted than before, with the battle camera switching viewpoints depending on the action and the fighters even casting realistic shadows on the ground. (The Pokemon are still 2D sprites, though, so don't expect some kind of massive Pokemon Colosseum-style graphic upgrade.) All this is in addition to the new monsters. So far, only Zorua and Zoroark have been revealed. They look pretty cool. Hopefully the new monsters will have some solid designs, as I thought the creatures were really jumping the shark after Gold and Silver. "As you can tell from the screenshots, Pokemon Black/White's adventure takes place in an area different in nature from before," a Pokemon Company rep told Famitsu. "The new story that unfolds in this place, along with the never-seen-before Pokemon you'll encounter, will allow both old fans and people who haven't played the other games to enjoy the experience without preconceptions." Also, if we can eliminate the IV/EV nonsense, or at least make those stats visible this time around, I will be very happy... The new games have a tentative fall release date in Japan and will presumably hit American DSes sometime soon afterward. Source: 1up.com

Meh. It's not that complicated. Every Pokemon has slightly different stats that make it unique (IV: Individual Value). Fighting different Pokemon helps you train different stats. Fight something strong, you get more strength, fight something fast, you get more speed (EV: Effort Value).
I agree that at least EV's should be visible though... It's a pain keeping up with them, which I think is why people think it's so complex and rediculous.

I'm just saying that invisible stats are kinda lame... Also: Serebii has clearer pics of the ones I previously posted: www.serebii.net/blackwhite/pics.shtmlFound a scetch of the trainer that Ken Sugimori (lead Pokemon artist) did a couple years ago it would seem...

Invisible is lame but kinda makes trading more of a necessity doesn't it? It should be more something along the lines of looking at the pokemon's "health" eg. Charmander is getting bulky (def EV high) Charmander is looking slim (speed ev)
etc
And for IVs
Jack is a muscular wooper (high attack)
Something like that. Don't tell you exact value, just give you an idea.
@ Tony - Meh think what you will, the point I'm making is they need to stop coming out with crap like it's Gta. New city, same story just new names (team rocket now team aqua/galactic, still 8 badges just new pokemon). All the things they've added since original gold/silver apart from tag battles have pretty much just been "cosmetic" upgrades. better gfx/pokemon. that's why we were all so hyped for HG/SS, because it was all the stuff we wanted, just upgraded. I'm merely pointing out if they're gonna make changes, it'd be nice to at least see something actually new. Pokemon is starting to feel like Tekken or sometihng. New characters and GFX, but same game. Sure if it's broke, don't fix it, but after the 10th sequel...

Cover Pokemon/Lengendaries revealed. You can see 'em on Serebii or the offical site, I think. The black one's pretty cool looking.
