Comfirmed Characters (and Changes)
Fox- He now keeps his blaster out at all times supposably
Kirby- Pink puffball in stunning new graphics!...he kinda looks the same...
Link- Badass. Simply Badass.
Mario- Duh
Meta-knight- Sweet!
Pikachu- Market sales in a cute little package
Pit- It's about time
Samus- She has really big guns. Literally
Wario- The Wario Waft... I actually remember joking with friends about that attack shortly after SSBM was released.
Snake- Cameo Time!
Rumors and such
Judging from all the loose talk running about, particularly concerning this japanese poll, Sonic will likely be in the game, but only if Sega cooperates. Megaman is also a very strong possibility. But as for any others, it is doubtful. Nintendo wants to limit the third-party characters it includes, so as to not "water down" SSB proud history.
While on that subject, I should point out that the only Megaman character that is likely to appear is the original. Any other characters would make it seem as if they skipped over the series' roots. As much as I'd like to see X and Zero I think they're leaning toward the Classic series.
While it has no basis, there is a rumor that Sonic's Super Smash would be a Super Sonic transformation. Another I've heard is Super Sonic being a whole other character. However, the chances of any other Sonic characters making an appearance are slim to zero. "Sayonara, Shadow... the Hedgehog..."
Megaman's ability absorbing powers might just play a role in this. The rumor is that he will get the power of the person he last defeated. These powers would also vary from Kirby's copy powers, and would be adapted to Mega's arm cannon. His charge shot is also rumored to make an appearance, and in the same fashion as in his own games.
A couple of Fire Emblem characters are being considered, including Lyn and Ike, the main character of Path of Radiance.
Supposedly, most of the clones are going bye-bye, but a few, like Ganondorf and Roy, are going to be re-worked and getting their own moves.
Of the new pokemon that are inevidably going to appear in Brawl, there is talk of Blaziken (whatever that is) being a playable character, along with a newer pokemon from the D/P versions.
Another Metroid character, besides ZS Samus, is said to be included in Brawl's roster but there is no further info at this time.
Most likey true tidbits
It has been confirmed that Ice Climbers, Game&Watch, and Young Link will not return. However, Wind Waker Link is set to take YL's place.
Ness and Jigglypuff are here to stay. These iconic characters are too memorable to get rid of.
King Dedede is said to be in Brawl. This would make alot of sense, seeing as how many gamers thought he would be in Melee.
In ZS Samus' bio, it says she will remove her suit if certain conditions are met. Judging from the movie that has been released, it seems as if her Super Smash move might be some kind of Super Charge Beam. The conditions for unlocking ZS Samus might be as simple as using Samus' Super Smash in Classic mode.
More characters being considered
Krystal- She wielding the staff from SF: Adventures.
Isaac - From Golden Sun, complete with swords and psyenergy
