Now I respect Capcom, they have a huge collection of successful titles like Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and the like. None being more personal to me than the Mega Man series, especially the X storyline.
Now this is just a nit-pick and even though it's not much to rag on, it's still very annoying to me.
Why does Mega Man X NOT have his own theme song? Since the early days of the SNES, he's been fighting the good fight, for everlasting peace. Beaten just about every enemy thrown at him, including Sigma world knows how many damn times. Yet he still isn't given any sort of respect or tribute. The series might as well be Mega Man -X because even though his name is in the title, het gets little damn respect. Who gets the publicity for the X series, who's the most popular bastard that about %75 of lazy recolors are based on?
Zero...
Oh Zero, don't get me wrong, you're a cool guy in your own right. But you're also overrated and spend most of your life six feet under, yet also happen to come back nearly every single damn time in one form or another. Let's do a comparison of these two.
X's been in all the games he's had his name in, and has no special theme songs. Though he does have one unique level song, and that's for the intro stage of X5. Not much to cheer about.
Meanwhile, Zero has about 4 special themes spanning all of the SNES era, has the most cutscenes and character development in X4, and has been in about 3 crossover games, which are SNK vs Capcom Chaos, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, and Marvel vs. Capcom 3. They try to sooth angry Mega Man fans over by giving Zero a Mega Man X alternate skin, but that's like repainting Dan to look like Akuma, it just doesn't do the job.
and neither has Capcom does its job to give X the respect he deserves. He's got no story, little character development beyond the DAMN remake of X1 on PSP. which came out over 15 years from the original. It takes 15 years to give X some actual depth other than him being the last creation of Dr. Light and his mysterious destiny with Zero.
There was even potential for a romantic sub-plot for X with the appearence of Alia, but it wasn't even touched on outside of X6. Speaking of X6, what happened to Gate? Even after he went maverick, Alia still wanted to help him. Now that I think about it, maybe that's why the X+Alia thing didn't work out, because her heart still belonged to Gate. Gah, he can't win for losing can he?
Plus, if you get all technical, since most reploids are based off his design, they're like his kids so there's that awkward robo-incest thing or something I don't fudgeing know man.
But I'm getting off track. Every Mega Man has been honored in one form or another, with X, ZX, and Star Force getting the boot. With ZX and Star Force, it's understandable since they're relatively new additions but X, like I said has been around since the early '90s.
Another game they could have used to build up X's personality and story was Command Mission, a fudgeing rpg. Now remember folks, Capcom are the braniacs behind Breath of Fire, one of the best RPG series of all time, especially the epic BoFIV for PSX (Pick it up when you get the chance, it's gorgeous.)
Yet, someone, Command Mission was a weak entry in the X universe. No, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything grand. Definetly not what it could have been, with a slow turn-based battle system and 4kids-esque voice actors which none of are Dan Green (Fun fact, he voice acted for a japanese hentai movie...that's just fudgeing boss)
Needless to say, they could have done a lot more with Command Mission. They introduced a lot of neat characters which, like X, save Zero of course, don't have too much going on for them. I'd like to know more about Marino, who is a skilled thief. Normally that's a maverick act, yet she allies with the hunters. That makes her more dynamic than say, Nana who kinda acts like a sassier Alia. I like her hair though, cause it stands out.
All of this could and would be understandable. I could deal with the lackluster character development, I could deal with him being more confined to his original series which became more mediocre as they went along but even after 20 years, they still haven't given him his own theme song?
I'm not talking about the game intros or the japanese vocal songs, I'm talking about a song that really personifies X as a character, as a hero, as a legend. Not some damn footnote in the Mega Man legacy.
Now that Keiji Inafune's moved on to newer and possibly better things, and Capcom basically giving the middle finger to Mega Man and his fans, I doubt X will ever truly be given the respect he deserves. I guess it makes sense why they make X Zero's bitch in just about every comic they're in together, cause that's pretty much what he is.
Thank you for your time.
