CM wasn't bad, it was actually a really fun game. It just wasn't canon.
As for Xtreme 1 and 2, I'm not sure if they really fit into the storyline, they seem like just cheap spinoffs too, but I dunno. They could fit I guess. I don't really remember them that well. I only played them once a long time ago (SpEX had em, and he let me borrow them).

Xtreme 1 happens between 2 and 3, I believe, and Xtreme 2 happens between 3 and 4. They had to have happened before 4, because Zero already knew Iris in MMX4.

X 1-2-Xtreme1-3-Xtreme2-4-5-6-7-CM (for those who choose anyway)-8. Q's answer reinforces this proposal for the Xtreme part.

I don't know about Xtreme but Xtreme 2 is canon since it introduces Iris and mentions Repliforce at the end.

It still makes sense to me. After all, you cannot have Xtreme 2 without Xtreme and you cannot have X5 without X4 first.

Got here a little late, but here's what I know of the timeline.
First, Dr. Light and Wily make Protoman, then Rock and Roll, then the other 6 original robots. At the time, Rock and Roll were not combat capable. When Wily steals the 6 robots because he was left in the shadow of Dr. Light and starts to wreak havoc (yeah, he skipped his anger management classes in college), Rock volunteers to be transformed into a combat robot, Megaman (Rockman). So apparently, Dr. Light's original robots had *some* free will, perhaps it was limited. Anyways, Megaman beats Wily a lot, and Wily starts to make Zero to defeat him, while at the same time Dr. Light is working on Megaman X, who has full free will, can think, and has a concience. To defeat Zero, Megaman, Protoman, and all those other guys come together. They are destroyed, but Zero is wounded and has to repair himself (takes centuries, bad technology). Dr Light dies, but seals Megaman X into that capsule.
Umm... something came up. I'll post the rest later.

... The second last and third last sentences of everyone banding together to defeat Zero is pures peculation. Unless you tell me you are actually able to get your hand on a Classic and X Complete Works book.

Ugh. I have dialup, and my connection is really glitchy. SO I just wrote a 3 page essay, and Earthlink decides to disconnect me right when I hit post. Long story short; it was all lost. Guess you can just go buy that book, huh ?

Well, unfortunately for the moment, it's only in Japan. And just released end of March too.

I would like to get my hands on a translation of all three complete works books...but I know that won't happen anytime in the near future...

Oho, so would I indeed. Well, with the Rockman and X Complete Works released already, I think there's only a lot of artwork in there, and other things as well. Too bad there may be no secrets or answers to the mysteries.
And I agree, who knows when the translations will come.
