here's how I figure the timeline goes that connects the series together:
Original Megaman -> Megaman X -> Megaman Zero -> Megaman Legends
I suppose some of you are wondering why Megaman Battle Network isn't on there. That's because it takes place in 200X which creates quite a conflict with the timeline of the original series making the Battle Network series as a seperate Megaman universe. As far as the others go they all are able to connect in some way. The way Megaman Zero and Megaman Legends connects maybe be in question as I see the only possible connection to each other to be only a theory(see my Refractors post in the Megaman Legends section for detail on that theory)

You just wanted this didn't you?
Okay, 200X - Before Megaman timeline.
To my observation, a XX or X is about either 100 years or less (Capcom is screwy with these things.)
I have a good explanation here. *ahem*
It starts out in 200X, as you know Lan and his netnavi Megaman fight Mr. Wily, a possible predessesor of Dr. Wily. In the first Battle Network game, Lan's dad is a genious at computers and such, which could in turn be a touch of "Dr. Light" to him.
Of course Lan's japanese name is "Netto Light" which puts more thought into the future of the timeline.
*ahem* to not get off track.
Lan probably lost interest in battling on the net and gone on with his real life, meanwhile Thomas Light had already gone through the protoman-wilybot business, when he had got wind of the Megaman netnavi. He reasearched the navi and built Megaman, which in turn later on left him to build X.
In X4, Megaman goes cyber again (Cyber Peaguy thingy) which leaves off the plot to MMBN, only X doesn't get all the cyber attachments (Mainly because he was not a netnavi, and PETs didn't exist any more in that time.)
Which after the X series comes the Zero series, we know about all that, then comes Legends, probably the final end of the MM story.

the X defines an unknown number for example 200X can be 2003 or 2009, therefor 200x is limited to 2000 - 2009 yearwise. Both Megaman Battle Network, Megaman 2 and 4 are all set in 200X so there is only a 10 year span in which they all can occur(All the BN games and MM 1-4)
MMBN would have to be first of all the series, Netto is doctor Light's grandson, and Wily is Wily, not a predecesor. Megaman.EXE was built partly by Dr. Light. X was made because Dr. Light wanted to create a robot that had a human mind with human emotions and thoughts.
Anyway, if MMBN came first and Wily was the known leader of World 3, why would Light become collegues with him later and trust him just to get his robots stolen? Also, in MMBN Wily seems to have cybernetic implants that he doesn't have in the original series, he also seems older in MMBN as well. Unless Wily had these removed and a fake eye put in, I don't see that MMBN would blend with the original series very well.
From what I see, they are 2 seperate universes, one being our universe where robotics is the dominant technology, and the other where the internet and computer programs are the dominant technology. There are other things that use basically the same characters but put them in different situations and have them meet in different ways and such(for example Tenchi Muyo Tenchi in Tokyo and Tenchi Universe do this)
-I watch the anime Rockman EXE, the games got too boring to finish

Maybe Dr. Light never knew about Wily's net attacks.

If I remember correctly, at the begining of Megaman X7, it refers to it as the year 22xx

Yeah, I guess that makes Zero REALLY old in MMZ Well, I think that MMZ follows the ending in X6 where Zero goes into a capsule, and I think that X7 follows the other ending in X6.

X7 would still have to occur anyway whether Zero was awake or not. The world doesn't revolve around him so live continues either way. Capcom has a huge habit of changing things as they go making things more complicated and confusing

Capcom has a huge habit of changing things as they go making things more complicated and confusing That's cause they have very little concept of planning ahead. They made Megaman X, it did great, so they made X2. It did good, so they made X3. It did good, so they made X4, and so on and so on. If they actually had some sense to plan ahead these stories would flow much more smoothly, not to mention the gap between MM and MMX might be a little smaller.

Capcom does seriously have a problem with planning ahead, you want to have a good game, you need to plan ahead.
