Yes, sprite theft. It's bad, and it gets it's own thread.
Normally, on Zero Virus we handeled sprite thieves by giving them a talking to and getting them to turn over a new leaf.
But as of late, there has been a serious outbreak of sprite theft on ZV, and I won't tolerate it any longer.
I'm now taking on a Zero Tolerance policy. From this point forward, if you're caught stealing other peoples work and claiming it as your own, I will ban you. No question asked.
And if you make another account, I will know it's you, and I will ban you again.
Are we clear people? Don't steal sprites. It's wrong. I've already done the long touching speech about it plenty of times, so I'm done being mister nice guy.
Once more...
DO NOT STEAL SPRITES!
That will be all for now.

No doubt about it, sprite theft is pathetic. I'm not a very skilled spriter, I can only make 8-bit and 16-bit sprites and while they may not be the best, they are mine dammit!!!!!! With that being said I support Nightmare's decision 100%. EDIT: In Addition to banning the theives you should stone them....with big rocks!!!!!

1. No, changing the IP won't work. Didn't work for Paragon, didn't work for LZX, why should it work for anyone else?
2. If you don't know what a sprite is then this announcement shouldn't concern you.

I am honestly sorry I did not even once think I was stealing. I really sincerly got it from google images. *kneels and begs for sorries* the thing is that they were not kuma, mabey they were before they were put up somwhere but they did not look like that when I found them. I found them and used them as a base for stances.

I will also admit to sprite theft although I was not aware that I was doing it. So I want to clarify to everyone, sprite theft is not just limited to stealing someone elses work and claiming credit for it as I had thought. It also includes modifying someones work/using it as a base or a model. When I first began spriting (if you can call my work spriting) I was told that if you change an image 25% then it isn't stealing and you can use it for yourself. In the same way that people take X and Zero bases and modify them without Capcom explicitly giving each person permission, it is easy to apply that to other sprites. I'm not excusing what happened, rather putting that out there so others do not make the same mistake. Sprite theft is not simply limited to claiming credit for another's work, it also means taking their work and changing it.

is it ok to take work from Capcom like I know many of us do? just using a base from Capcom I mean, or recolouring them.

I am not gonna lie, My current sprite/avatar is loosely based on Vile's sprite from MMX, however I didn't just copy and paste a pic of Vile then modify it, I just used him as reference to for the stance and shoulder/leg armor. I did ALOT of this with nothing to reference. But I feel obligated to give credit where credit is due. I don't beleive there is anything wrong with using a well-known sprite as a base so long as the larger portion of it is your own work
EDIT: Using an existing sprite as a base is one of the best ways to learn how to sprite. I should know just messing around with existing sprites has given me whatever bit of ability I have. The downside is the even when I do something 100% on my own it always seems to be in MMX style animation.

Capcom is a different matter. They don't care when people take their sprites an edit it. Why? For one the original spriters were paid to sprite. Two, infact Capcom does know about the spriting community and leaves it alone as it acts as free advertisement.
All in all, when editing Capcom's stuff its all good for them in the end.
