Model Omega, your post makes no sense. You're just like, repeating what Elusis just said >_>.

Except adding that he thinks Sprite Theft is okay.

Model Omega I don't agree with you at all. What Elusis said is very correct and what you said is very wrong. Of course I care if someone uses my work for his personal benefiet without asking me first. It's like baking a cake and someone else eating it. They might not claim it as their own but they still enjoy my piece of delicious art.=)

Sprite theft is not okay. It's just as bad as plagiarism and you can get arrested for that. Only difference between the two is one is literature and one is pixel art.
Capcom knows about the spriting community, and they don't care, because they consider it Fan Art. Fan Art is okay. Stealing other people's work and claiming it as your own is not.
Now, personally, I don't care what your guys' opinions on Sprite theft are, so long as I'm an administrator of this Forum it will not be tolerated here.
So go ahead, say sprite theft is okay. I don't mind if you think it's okay.
But go through with it, steal sprites and you get the boot. Simple as that.
Now if I find a post in here in response to what I just said going "OMG I DIDANT SEY SPRIT THEFT IS OK STFU NITEMARE!" then I'm deleting it and locking the thread.
I'm stating this post so that my feelings on the matter be known, not so you can argue what I think your view is.

Yea, it didn't work for me, but I wasn't banned for sprite theft. Bad example, NMMZ, you're making it seem like my badassery is in the same boat as idiocy. Come on now, you should know better by now. =P
And I'm also in complete agreement with this as well, but I was also in complete agreement with this from the very beginning of my spriting hobby. People stealing other people's work doesn't work in the real world, it shouldn't work in the world of spriting either. Let's get some copyrights going. And then.. We start suing.

I have a question: If someone who had no idea who NightmareMegaManZero was was to recolor a Zero series Zero sprite to the exact color scheme of Nightmare, then present it on another forum as their sprite form, would that be considered sprite theft or coincidence? And what would it be considered if they did know Nightmare and use that sprite in a comic complete with the personality of Nightmare? Would THAT be sprite theft or counterfitting?

That actually is a good question. NightmareMegaManZero could be fairly easily made by anyone and its not a scratch sprite that'd be easily recognizable if stolen. NightmareMegaManZero is just a simple recolor of a Capcom sprite, nothing done with it as far as I can tell. Nightmare (from our forum) however has added some attacks and moves to his sheet that aren't in Capcom's MMZ sheet. To the best of my knowledge someone could use a NightmareMegaManZero and not be a sprite thief - providing they made the sprites themself and didn't steal our Nightmare's sheet. Using one of his unique attacks would be a good tipoff.
Is that correct, anyone?
And that gives me a question I want to ask. What if you saw something really cool and wanted to copy it? Suppose I saw a really cool Sigma edit and decided I wanted a character like that: could I take a Sigma sprite and edit it in the same way the other person did and call the sprite mine? Not stealing the sprites but recreating them yourself? Maybe if I added on the sheet "made by me, inspired by __________" There would obviously be some differences in the sprites as it wouldn't be a pixel perfect copy unless you copy and pasted parts on, and if you do the work to change the sprite yourself, is that ok?

Design theft?
Remaking a sprite, I generally don't like that idea...

We discussed that you are allowed recolour sprites from Capcom legally

I'm sure other people have thought of taking Nightmare Zeros pallatte and applying it to MMZ Zero. I don't care if someone else does that. I would care if they took my custom poses and claimed them as their own, or took my scratched sprites and claimed them as their own.
As for remaking other peoples sprites, I don't think that's okay. It's one thing to get a little inspiration, but to copy someone elses work completely I think is almost as bad as sprite theft.
And yes Paragon, my apologies, I'd like to state for the record that Paragon is above sprite theft and to my knowledge has never stolen other peoples work and claimed it as his own.

I guess I'll put my own two cents in...
Sprite theft as it has been discussed already, is zero tolerance issue. Stealing sprites from others and claiming them our own is the worst kind of stealing to happen, HOWEVER, imagine this.. someone makes a sprite from scratch, you're happy, everyone sees it but someone... decides to 'borrow' the design, clothing it and coloring it differently, would it be theft?
That's harder to say, only that, unless there's "Public Domain" signed to the pic, I think it is sprite theft if the original creator sees the sprite and recognizes it as his own. What do you think of it?
And also, this is the reason I don't upload my sprites anywhere really... I dislike the idea of leaving them out in the open and become a victim to such childish behavior... Sorry if I offended anyone with this, didn't mean to. But yea, my two cents..

I should clarify that Sprite Theft should only apply to a sheet that has not been presented as Public Domain or ripped from Games, as Cain just posted above.
Those spriters brazen enough to demand credit for anything do not deserve it, because credit is earned, not asked for.
Unless someone has expressly posted that said sprites are "For Show" only, You are committing theivery.
Once again, If you steal sprites, like for say swiping Xero's sprite, and changing it.. you will face a fate worse than Banning.
I will effing feed you to Lord Cthulhu, Dark God of the Abyss and King of Madness. And he'll start with YOUR HEAD. (IA! IA SAKKAKTH MAE XIL LAUS CTHULHU!)

I hereby add on another rule, as a Spriter. not as a staff member (cuz i ain't).
If you happen to oh say, whine about having your sprite used in a Toy animate, without permission, stfu.
Seriously. it's the Spritekill Thread. Anything goes there. We kill each other in sprite fights. Reaver didn't bitch when i swiped his avatar and fragged it. i never asked. He never whined So the next time I catch someone bitching that i stole their sprite, i will double pwn you. clear as crystal. (that goes double for Miguel, whom Tony says cheats at Cards)
