With the Chat Room out of commision, we've decided it's time we make a decision.
Find a chat room that runs off of an IRC Client, similar to the one we have now, or fina a private chat room, similar to the old one.
IRC Based Chat
Pros: -An IRC based chat will allow access through mIRC or Trillian. -Everyone already knows how the IRC based chat works.
Cons: -Anyone can wander into an IRC based chat and flame people. -Accessing the chat through another program defeats the purpose of me going through the trouble to integrate it into the forum.
Private Chat
Pros: -The Members of Zero Virus can chat amongst themselves without worry of random flamers wandering in and causing an uproar. -Having to access the chat through the forum won't make me waste my time. -You won't be at a disadvantage if you don't know IRC coding, since the IRC users can use it and others cannot.
Cons: -Members with slower or older computers may experience longer wait times to get in. -Frequent IRC users will have to access the chat through the forum as well to get in, instead of simply opening another channel.
We hope that you'll all vote and make this decision easier on the staff.

I vote IRC. It's what I know best, It's what I do best. Considering I have possibly the forum's crappiest box, if you moved to a new chat you'd lose a beating post. <<;

I think the private chat would help the aleged flame war.

I vote IRC, because it has more advantages than something like SigmaChat does. If we get an exclusive chatroom, it's possible that it will have a limit on how many members can be in the channel at the same time...
That's why I'd like to keep the IRC channel open even if a new chat was employed. Plus, you have the IRC channel set up so that it won't show up if anybody tries to access a channel list or access it through someone's /whois. IRC also has very few exploits, the worst of which being botters and flooders, which have NOT appeared at all since DarkMyst employed stricter Anti-Bot security measures. Plus, there's the SYSOPs who run the servers, you can contact them if your channel's being flooded or spammed... You SHOULD be smart enough to not accept files from people you don't know. And no, no one has had their computer taken over by a hacker just because they were on IRC. They can get your hostmask, and your IP, but they can't control your PC directly over mIRC. Plus, if they try that, just report them to the SYSOPs of DarkMyst, and if it happens again ask that they report the criminal (yes, it is a crime to hack someone's computer) to their ISP on calls of abuse.
That's one of the disadvantages of exclusive chat clients on forums: For one, they usually don't work very well. Second off, if anybody really wanted to flood the channel it'd be easy to do it, and most of the script kiddies can find something for an exclusive chat client to either crash the server, infect the users with some sort of virus, or just generally super-flood the place so that everybody lags and no one can do anything about it.
Plus, if something goes wrong with the chatting part of the client, who do we have to contact? Either no one or a complicated service team who will just redirect you to a FAQ, like Steam Support, even though Steam Support also answers your questions directly (and that I like about them). If the support team for these chat clients can't fix it, then guess what? Obviously no one can, and everybody you ask at various internet places will probably point a finger at you and laugh for not using a real chat client and instead some exclusive crud that probably didn't have high marks with it's userbase to begin with.
It is my will that I vote in favor of the IRC client, even if I don't really have control over what goes on in there despite founder-level power... Which might change by the end of today. (I'll explain more via PM if requested.) I'd rather look for a different Java IRC applet. Or just ask people to use mIRC, which would be the best idea (because of compatibility, everybody can customize what colors they see...)

Well, I've been looking into some chats that run off of IRC channels, and some that don't, and alot look rather promising (alot have moderation abilities =D). I'll have to talk em over with the rest of the staff, and we'll have to test them, but we're gonna wait probobly another week to see how the poll turns out to figure out what kind of chat we should get.

I don't know what to vote. It doesnt matter to me, as long as we get a chat up and running that works well

So the only difference is that you need to be a member on zv for private chat...right?

The most important issue here is this; with an IRC based chat, anybody can get into the chat from just about anywhere. With a different private chat, you would have to be a member of the forum to access it. All the other specific differences are listed in Nightmare's post.

Then I think private, cause it makes it this forum's own chat.
