This video talks about the differences between the 3DS and WiiU versions of Smash Bros.
It also goes into more detail about the way Villager, Trainer and Megaman attack. Megaman gets lots of attention here, showing off all of his special and smash attacks.

Imma just dump some thoughts I have on this whole thing right here. First off I have to say I was shocked MegaMan was in it. It figures though the first good thing to happen to MegaMan in 5 years and it's Nintendo who does it, not Capcom. I can't say I'm a big fan of Classic MegaMan (would have rather seen X or Trigger personally) but he kind of is the obvious choice so not really complaining. I can't say I'm surprised about the Villager considering people were waiting for Animal Crossing stuff since Brawl and a new Animal Crossing just came out. He actually looks a little fun, wouldn't mind trying him out. Wii Fit Trainer seems like an incredibly dumb idea. Putting aside the fact that she's amusing and looks like she kicks ass, I feel like there are so many really good character ideas that something like this is just a waste of a character slot. Same way I feel about Mr.Game & Watch (yes I know, but he was a dumb edition too come on.) As far as our returning guys go, Samus looks good, disappointed Link doesn't more closely resemble his Skyward Sword appearance, Pit's revamps look interesting, and why in God's name does poor Mario still have that terrible, terrible FLUDD move... Characters aside, graphics look amazing. Very beautiful game. Not as realistic looking as Brawl, but the HD clarity makes up for it and really drives home the Nintendo feel. Even the 3DS version looks really good. I will say I'm gonna be disappointed if the only difference between the Wii U and 3DS Versions are stages and graphics, though. I don't necessarily want exclusive characters, but I would like to see some other little subtle differences. On that note, a little disappointed that so far the stages seem to be boring like in Brawl (where 4/5 of the stages are just one big platform with three little platforms.) Would like to see more stages though. Battlefield is looking rather slick this time around, even moreso than in Brawl. I'd also like to hear more about items. Apparently the Gooey Bomb is leaving the arsenal, at least I feel like that was implied when describing MegaMan's Crash Bomb. One last thing: Gonna be disappointed if the title is final. Seems kinda boring to just be "Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS." I was looking forward to a new title with a word for wailing on each other. Overall though I'm excited.

The Wii U and 3DS versions of the new Super Smash Bros. will not feature cross-platform play, director of Sora Ltd. Masahiro Sakurai tells Joystiq. Since each version of the game has completely different stages, cross-platform play wouldn't work, he told us through an interpreter. Each version will interact with one another, however, as announced back in 2011. Specifically, players will be able to take characters they've customized and transfer them to the Wii U version. He wouldn't elaborate on exactly what those customizations are, saying only that they won't be costumes and they won't be something that players have to unlock through repetitive tasks. Different costumes, he said, would take away from what makes each character unique. He also wanted to avoid boring, repetitive tasks, while Sora works to produce a "stress free, easy connectivity" between the two versions. When asked if the level editor would return, Sakurai gave us a "no comment." www.joystiq.com/2013/06/13/wii-u-and-3ds-smash-bros-will-not-have-cross-platform-play-wil/

I'm pretty sure we were promised cross platform combat, so that actually really sucks. Makes it a whole lot less worth it to get both versions now...
Still though I am interested in what these supposed "customizations" are... He said no costumes, but I'm assuming that means freely customizing your costume. I wouldn't be surprised if you could pick from a set of costumes and maybe recolor them yourself.
I at the very least hope we see more characters in Wario's position where they have not just recolors but a whole other costume to choose from. There's lots of these characters that have other outfits they can appear in.
Though another cool thing would be customizing your specials. Maybe be able to swap them out for alternate ones. It'd actually be really cool if you could say swap Mario's down B from FLUDD back to the Mario Tornado if you so wish, or go with Pit's old specials OR his new ones should you so wish, or say add a Skyward Strike to Link's repertoire if you so fancy. I think that'd add to a really interesting strategic element and help you build a character that suits your feel.

I feel like the title will eventually be Smash Bros Universe or something like that, I doubt they'll leave it SSB4.
Cross platform combat not being a thing is a little upsetting. To be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about it being them asking us to buy the game for two different platforms with only subtle differences, I'm feeling right now like I'll probably just pick up the console version and leave the hand-held. Are you guys thinking of buying both versions, what are your thoughts on this?
Being able to customize your characters would be pretty cool. I think taking a generic Mii and being able to grab moves from any character and make yourself the ultimate avatar would be pretty crazy, though less realistic than being able to swap certain moves like Mario's FLUDD and Tornado as mentioned above. That would be pretty cool, because you'd have to approach different players using the same character differently. I'd really like to see that actually, I didn't even know they were thinking about such mechanics until now.
As for the characters thus far, I feel like they knew that the excitement over Megaman would be enough to carry Villager and Miss Fit and that's why they revealed them first. Other secret characters will probably be exciting enough on their own, so better to show off the strange additions that no one saw coming alongside the game's announcement. And from a business standpoint, its a smart move. Every time a character has gotten into Smash Bros., interest in their series has risen dramatically. Fire Emblem is the best example, seeing as we might never have gotten to play those games in NA if players weren't so interested in Marth and Roy. So I suppose this is their way of getting more people to buy Animal Crossing and Wii-Fit games. They certainly weren't the characters I was expecting, but I have no real issue with their inclusion either.

While we're speculating, we were discussing this in the chat yesterday, but apparently in a few interviews there were some concerns with the roster being limited due to 3DS limitations and wanting to keep the cast the same between the two versions, as well as discussion on difficulty of stuff such as team players in the 3DS version.
This has kind of lead us to assume there'll be a lot of cuts from Brawl, and we may even have an overall smaller roster than Brawl did.
Discussing the possibilities, we kind of assumed that most characters who have been consistent for more than one game are safe (though characters like the Ice Climbers have a high probability of being cut, same with Mr.Game & Watch.) Because of that though we were kind of looking at new Brawl additions and trying to make assumptions about who will stick around and who'll get the axe.
My own predictions are that, first of all Sonic and definitely Snake are almost certainly out. Sonic has a slim possibility of staying due to Sega and Nintendo's relationship, but I'd be a little surprised if either of them came back.
As far as non-cameo Brawl additions go... I feel like King Dedede and Meta Knight are probably safe because they're popular and the Kirby series is generally popular. Pit is obviously safe. Ike I feel is safe because he plays rather uniquely compared to other characters and his games are popular, but a lot of people seem to think he'll get cut for another FE representative... Wario I feel isn't going anywhere, neither is Diddy Kong.
As for ones who ARE likely to be cut, I feel like unless they give him a move overhaul, Lucas is gone. Falco has been around since Melee so he's probably okay but Wolf is in the same boat as Lucas-- Unless he receives a major overhaul he probably is getting cut. I feel like Lucario is also likely out, and may even be replaced with the dumb Awakened Mewtwo from the new Pokemon games... ROB is definitely gone, Pokemon Trainer is probably gone but I can see them keeping him... Toon Link is 50/50 really because he is kind of just a clone of Link, but Wind Waker is getting remade so they may keep Toon Link around because of that. Olimar could probably go, but he's getting popular with the Smash Community and Pikmin is getting a new game, so he may stay or be replaced with someone from the later Pikmin games.
The only other people I think that are in danger are like I said before, the Ice Climbers and Mr.Game & Watch. I don't think anyone else who has been around since Melee (and certainly none of the first game's veterans) are going anywhere though.
As far as new additions go, I can't really say. Personally I would really like to see Ghirahim from Skyward Sword, and even though I feel like the opportunity was lost in Brawl, a Star Fox Adventures version of Krystal would be cool... I can't really say I'm dying to see anyone else. If we wanted to go for a real stretch, let's say Geno from Super Mario RPG or a Majora's Mask themed Young Link.

Regarding 3DS limitations, Sakurai stated in a later interview that he wasn't holding back the Wii U version for the sake of the 3DS one. He said if there's an item or mechanic or something they want to include, but can't make work on the 3DS, they simply won't include it.
That still leaves his comment on team characters, though. He said they're having trouble with characters who include more than one fighter on the 3DS. I know in Brawl they had to up the transformation time because it took longer to load the other character, so I don't know if something similar is happening here or what. I'm kind of expecting Ice Climbers, Pokemon Trainer, Olimar, Zelda, and Samus to be reworked a bit, though.

I'm sort of expecting the Ice Climbers to be cut, same with Pokemon Trainer. I'm assuming Sheik and Zero Suit Samus will still probably be a thing, though. Zelda especially I don't think will change much just because there seems to be some fear of drastic change to consistent characters out of fear of pissing off the fanbase or something...

The news that this new game might not support as many characters is pretty sad to me. Part of what I love about Smash is its ever expanding roster and the anticipation over who might get into each new game. If the roster is going to remain largely the same, or even have fewer characters then I'm suddenly less okay with Villager and Miss Fit getting in, since they'd be axing characters that I feel more strongly about their inclusion. I understand that the 3DS is less powerful and may not be able to handle it, but imo they shouldn't just leave stuff out of the Wii-U version in the interests of keeping them the same. Ideally I want all of the past characters to return, (with characters like Lucas/Gannondorf getting move overhauls) because a multitude of characters keeps the game fresh. I like to play as, and fight with a variety of characters, and I find it really fun when I come up against someone that can effectively use one of the lesser used characters.

Roster size isn't an issue of hardware limitations, because character models and moveset information really don't take up a lot of space. Brawl could fit on a standard size 3DS card, and probably half of its total file size comes from cutscenes, and the bulk of the rest of it being devoted to music, sound, and texture files. The issue comes from a balancing standpoint, because each time you add a character you have to make sure it's balanced against all the others, and that process takes longer each time. However, in recent interviews, Sakurai has stressed how he hates cutting characters and that they're trying to include as many characters as possible. This helps to allay some fears we had before from comments regarding Brawl's "reaching about the maximum as far roster size." I don't think we're going to see a jump the size of 64 > Melee or Melee > Brawl, but I think we'll have at least a slightly larger roster than we had in Brawl.
