The colors are still in the works, but people have been making mod kits to change the colors.
And DVD playback has been scrapped, no real need for it.

Well, Nintendo really went “above and beyond” for a guy named John. John had a Wii that just wasn’t working properly and as you’ll soon see, Nintendo isn’t all about sales and making money 24/7 but rather that they still care about their customers.
“I’ve had a Wii for 2 years now and had my first problem with it about a month ago. When playing a game, specifically Resident Evil 4, green digital artifacts would show on the screen. It was also happening with Guitar Hero World Tour. I [went] to the Nintendo website, looked up my serial number, and was informed that it was out of warranty (which I expected) and I would have to pay $75 for it to be fixed.
I decided to call the customer service number and see if anything else could be done. I spoke to a very friendly woman who was in California. She looked up my serial number and informed me that it was, in fact, “still under warranty” and promptly took down the problem and e-mailed me a printable Fedex shipping label. I sent off the Wii and anxiously awaited its return. The next week my Wii came back, and on the paper detailing the repairs, it stated that they were not able to duplicate the problem. “Oh great” I thought to myself, but upon further reading I discovered that they had replaced the motherboard because it was the “suspected cause” of the problem, and also sent me 2 brand new copies of Resident Evil 4 and Guitar Hero World Tour, all at no cost. For my 2 year old Wii, I would say this is above and beyond the call of duty and wanted others to know.”

Back when the Nintendo Wii launched in 2006, the company showed possible console colors: White, red, silver, lime green and black. White was the launch color, and that's all customers have had. Until now. Today, Nintendo announced that it will be launching a black-colored Wii in Japan on August 1 for ¥25,000 (US$260). Besides the console, Nintendo will be selling black Wii peripherals as well. They are priced as follows: • Black Wii Remote ¥3,800 (US$40) • Black Nunchaku ¥1,800 (US$19) • Black Classic Controller Pro ¥2,000 (US$21) Rumor has it that the black Wii will have a larger storage unit. No word yet on US release or DVD playback.

I still dunno ytf they wouldn't make it with dvd playback, at least. Get with the times, Nintendo. That black looks slick though.

Nintendo makes games, not DVD players.
Sony is an electronics company, as is Microsoft. So it's not surprising their systems have something like that. Only devices Nintendo really makes is stuff to play their games on. So that's ytf they didn't put in DVD Playback.
And that new color looks... Awesome, for lack of a better word.

Eh, it could be partly because Nintendo only makes games, but you can't deny how they cut corners. I can't imagine it would be hard to get the thing to play DVDs, and lets not even talk about the crappy online play.
The black does indeed look slick, but unfortunatly I've already got a Wii and really don't plan on buying a second for the color.

The black Wii console, which we already knew was coming, has today been officially revealed by Nintendo of America. It'll still be $200, and include not one game, but two. Along with the Wii console, controller and nunchuk, the new Wii pack will include a Wii MotionPlus accessory and a copy both of Wii Sports and its sequel, Wii Sports Resort. We knew this too, but still, official details are always appreciated. This price and bundle deal will extend to both the black and existing white models of the console, with the new pack (and black Wii) going on sale on May 9.
