Artifacts

Artifacts are pieces of objects earned in BattleBob that enhance the player in some way during battle. Artifacts debuted with BattleBob's Single Player Mode and are a staple of Single Mode's gameplay.

Artifacts can alter conditions in a number of ways: They can alter the player's stats, change the player's bare hands, give the player a weapon, afflict the player with a status effect, arm the player with an item to use in battle via the `item command, alter the EXP or JP earned at the end of battle, increase the Zenny or Artifact drop rates, or even all of the above! Artifacts allow for endless possibilities in BattleBob because of their flexible nature; any one Artifact can potentially do any and all things an Artifact is capable of.

Types of Artifacts

Artifacts come in all shapes and sizes with countless different kinds of effects. Disregarding the specific effects, however, there are a few different types of Artifacts that vary in their usage slightly. First let's examine the two main categories of Artifacts: Consumable, and Nonconsumable. Within these two categories are two non-mutually-exclusive sub-categories: Passive Artifacts, and Triggered Artifacts.

Consumable Artifacts

Consumable Artifacts are denoted by having a quantity next to them when acquiring and storing them. Consumable Artifacts, as the name implies, are expended and disappear after using them. Because of this, consumable Artifacts should typically only be used when their effects would be particularly useful.

Consumable Artifacts can often times stack together in the player's bag. The amount of each consumable Artifact the player can carry is not an across the board number, however, and rather it depends on the specific Artifact. Certain very potent consumable Artifacts can only be carried 1 at a time, whereas weaker or more common Artifacts may stack as high as 9. One Artifact can only take up one slot in the player's bag, even if the Artifacts are consumable and stackable; This means that if the player reaches the maximum number of a consumable Artifact they can stack, they cannot carry any more.

It should be noted that Triggered Artifacts will not be consumed unless they are specifically used in battle, even if they are Consumable Artifacts.

Example of Consumable Artifacts:

<Nightmare> `artifact
-Bob- Collected Artifacts
-Bob- 1.) Cyber Soul | Grants Cyber's Barehand
-Bob- 2.) 2x EXP Potion (x1) | Earn 2x EXP at the end of battle
-Bob- 3.) Hairpin | CHA +2
-Bob- 4.) Potion (x4) | Recover 10 HP
-Bob- 5.) Summoner's Robe | MAG +3, DEF -1, EVA -5

Note the quantity indicators on the Consumable Artifacts.

Nonconsumable Artifacts

Most artifacts are nonconsumable, and unless the Artifact has a quantity indicator, it should be assumed that the Artifact is nonconsumable. Nonconsumable Artifacts are particularly useful because they can be used an endless number of times in battle.

Nonconsumable Artifacts differ from Consumables in another way in that they can never stack together. This is hardly an inconvinience, however, seeing as there's no need to stack an Artifact that can be used an infinite number of times.

Example of Nonconsumable Artifacts:

<Nightmare> `artifact
-Bob- Collected Artifacts
-Bob- 1.) Cyber Soul | Grants Cyber's Barehand
-Bob- 2.) 2x EXP Potion (x1) | Earn 2x EXP at the end of battle
-Bob- 3.) Hairpin | CHA +2
-Bob- 4.) Potion (x4) | Recover 10 HP
-Bob- 5.) Summoner's Robe | MAG +3, DEF -1, EVA -5

Nonconsumable Artifacts have no quantity indicators beside them.

Passive Artifacts

Passive Artifacts are Artifacts whose effects are activated at the start of battle and will (usually) remain in effect for the duration of the battle. Passive Artifacts can be either Consumable or Nonconsumable in nature.

Most Artifacts are Passive Artifacts, either modifying stats or changing the player's weapon (or both) at the start of battle. That being said, it is possible for Artifacts to both have passive and triggered effects.

The easiest way to identify a Passive Artifact is by the language used when the Artifact is equipped: Passive Artifacts will often use the line "<Player> uses <Artifact>" (if consumable) or "<Player> equips <Artifact>" (if nonconsumable) with Passive Artifacts.

Example of Passive Artifacts:

<Nightmare> `artifact
-Bob- Collected Artifacts
-Bob- 1.) Cyber Soul | Grants Cyber's Barehand
-Bob- 2.) 2x EXP Potion (x1) | Earn 2x EXP at the end of battle
-Bob- 3.) Hairpin | CHA +2

-Bob- 4.) Potion (x4) | Recover 10 HP
-Bob- 5.) Summoner's Robe | MAG +3, DEF -1, EVA -5

It's not always clear whether an Artifact has a Passive or Triggered effect just by looking at it. Sometimes experimentation is the best way to master use of Artifacts.

Triggered Artifacts

Triggered Artifacts are Artifacts whose effects must be activated in the middle of battle by use of the `item command. Triggered Artifacts can be either Consumable or Nonconsumable in nature, though Consumable Triggered Artifacts will only be lost if they are used via `item.

A majority of Triggered Artifacts are items that deal flat damage to the opponent or healing items that heal a static amount of HP to the player. It is possible for Artifacts to both have passive and triggered effects, however.

The easiest way to identify a Triggered Artifact is by the language used when the Artifact is equipped: Triggered Artifacts will often use the line "<Player> pockets <Artifact>" with Triggered Artifacts.

Example of Triggered Artifacts:

Acquiring Artifacts

Players can obtain Artifacts from two main ways: Either winning them in battles, or buying them with Zenny.

All NPC Battlers carry Artifacts that they may drop if they are defeated in battle. Most NPCs carry 4 Artifacts; 1 Common Drop, 1 Uncommon Drop, 1 Rare Drop, and their Soul (whose rarity depends on the Threat Level of the NPC's bare hands.) The NPC will randomly carry one of their Artifacts into battle, the probability of the NPC dropping the Artifact they're carrying depends on the Artifact. It should be noted that Artifacts carried by NPCs are unique and tend to be stronger.

If the player has accumulated enough Zenny from fighting battles, they may also purchase Artifacts through two different means.

The first of which is through the Artifact Shop. The Artifact Shop stocks 5 random Artifacts appropriate for the player's level and will charge depending on the Artifact. Players can view this shop with the `shop command. The shop restocks every day at 12:00 AM PST, so players should remember to check back often.

The other way players can purchase Artifacts is through the Artifact Capsule Machine. This Capsule Machine charges a flat rate and gives the player a random Artifact appropriate for their level. The Capsule Machine has its advantages, but can also be risky considering the player won't know what they're getting from it.
